Basic Elements of a Miracle (Arkan Al-Mua’gizah)
Praise be to Allah the Lord of the worlds, His Blessing and Peacefulness be upon the most honorable messenger; our Master maulana Mohammed and his righteous and pure family.
The relation between the servant and the Worshiped One is based on the Rights of Lordship (Haq Al-Rububyiah), which is, at the same time, the Duty of Servantship (Wajib Al-U’budyiah), and there is no way around that no matter how high is the rank of the servant including prophets, messengers, Awliaa and angels. When Allah –SWT- allows a miracle or a Karamah (special honor) to happen on the hands of a prophet or a wali (respectively), and He attributes it to him, it does not mean that this servant has done it with his own power. Since Allah –SWT- does not need or benefit from the miracle or the karamah, but the servant needs it, He lets it happen by the hands of his servant as a support for those who follow him, and a challenge to those who disbelieve him. The Command of all things is in the hands of Allah, even though He may attribute –with His will- His actions to any of His creatures.
Whether it was a real or metaphoric action, when Moses (Musa) stroke the sea with his rod and it split up into what looked like two separate huge masses of a mountain, as the action is narrated in the Quran, Allah told Moses, by inspiration “Edrab bi Asaka Al Bahr”, which can be translated as (Strike the sea with your rod.). Was the secret behind this miracle present in the sea, the rod or in Moses? I think the secret did not exist in any of them, but it existed in Allah’s saying “Strike”, and all what were mentioned after His saying “Strike” was just tools in the hands of the Divine Power (Kudrah Ilahyiah). We know that all tools are created by Allah’s hands and are commanded by His command, and must listen to and obey Him. So, Moses was a commanded tool, the rod was a commanded tool and the sea was a commanded tool too. When all the tools obey –and it MUST obey- then the miracle occurs. To better understand this we say, if someone had stolen Moses’ rod while he was sleeping, would he be able to divide the sea, or strike the stone so the water would gush out of it? The answer is: No.
The reason, I think, is that Allah –SWT- had made the rod one of the basic elements of the miracle, the sea was another one, Moses was a basic element and the Divine Permission is also one, actually it is the cornerstone of the miracle, “Wa La takolan-na Lishae-n Enni Faa’eloun Dhalika Ghada-n Ella An Yasha-Allah” which means (Nor say of anything, I shall be sure to do so and so tomorrow- without adding, “So please Allah”).
The miracle is defined as: breaching of a Divine custom by a Divine power, occurs by the hands of whomsoever Allah chooses of His servants and attributes it to him. The Karamah is similarly bestowed on and occurs by the hands of awliaa, as a miracle is bestowed on the prophets (Alayhum As-salam).
May Allah’s Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon you all.
There s no power or might except with Allah.
